Before
even the birth, our senses wake up - the tastes and the smells
which assail us in - utéro are already going to mark our
future preferences... The relationship with the food influenced
the human behavior since the origin (civilizations of hunters,
breeders, farmers and now of consumers) It is in the heart of
myths, of rites, of prohibitions and faiths very particular according
to times, civilizations and the religions.
By seeing the children drawing fishes in coated with breadcrumbs
squares and chickens cellophane-wrapped, I became aware of the
increasing ditch which separates the producer - which aims at
the profitability and at the industrialization, of the consumer
- which goes as far as losing any contact with the origin of
things, and often also the notion of what is good for him...
So I wanted to question my own mythology concerning the smells
and the flavours. I tried to revive the memories which are associated
to them; mostly fragments of childhood returned to me to the
memory, the buried sensations, moments of happiness or distress...
The capacity of the smells and the flavours to make a past appear
which we considered forgotten is not only infinite but perfectly
unverifiable and source of intense feelings.
Our relation in the food conditions more or less consciously
the connections which we maintain with our own body and the image
that we have it, but also our social connections. By making a
bend by my own story, I send back each to these questions:
" what I eat, why, how ? " How elaborate our choices
and our food habits, connected not only to our education and
to our culture, but also to the strong pressures of the market
which aims at the standardization of the behavior by the globalization
of an industrialized consumption. The offer and the advertizing
seek us permanently, but at the same time the concern of our
physical aspect and our health aim at making us prefer the quality
on the quantity...
Between both, remorse and frustrations assail us, which make
the fortune of magazines proposing us confusedly recipes, diets,
advertizing and advice of health...
Each
meets in front of the own memories, experiences and habits, tastes
and food fantasies - which he likes comparing and sharing... |
